Learning Analytics

What is Learning Analytics?

Learning analytics is the collection, analysis, and reporting of data about learners and their interactions with digital learning environments (e.g., Canvas). The purpose of learning analytics is to better understand learning, optimize instructional environments, improve learning outcomes, and promote the success of instructors and learners. In so doing, our aim is to thoughtfully analyze and share displays of data with instructors, students, and administrators.  We understand that relying solely on quantitative data and algorithmic analyses can ignore differences in individuals’ life experiences and potentially perpetuate bias. Thus, our approach to learning analytics is iterative and incremental and when possible, analyses are combined with qualitative data and the voices of those from whom the data are collected. Our Mission

Our mission is to continually improve the effective use of instructional tools and systems through learning analytics to enhance the educational experience of all Stanford students, instructors, faculty, and program admins.

Reporting and Dashboards

We have developed a number of template dashboards that may answer key questions out of the box and/or spur ideas. After reviewing these templates, we recommend scheduling a consultation with our staff to initiate a new learning analytics project or simply explore what's possible. Our approach to learning analytics is highly collaborative and understanding context is key to developing data reports or dashboards that meet specific goals of instructors, students, and departments.

From Pilots to Actionable Analytics

Pilot projects have been key components in our learning analytics journey. These pilots have been aimed at identifying specific analytics needs, exploring Canvas data for actionable insights, and co-building tools with stakeholders. We have tested new analytic tools, methodologies, and dashboards with instructors, advisors, and departments to assess their ability to answer key questions and ultimately enhance the learning experience for students.
