What is Learning Analytics?
Learning analytics is the collection, analysis, and reporting of data about learners and their interactions with digital learning environments (e.g., Canvas). The purpose of learning analytics is to better understand learning, optimize instructional environments, improve learning outcomes, and promote the success of instructors and learners. In so doing, our aim is to thoughtfully analyze and share displays of data with instructors, students, and administrators. We understand that relying solely on quantitative data and algorithmic analyses can ignore differences in individuals’ life experiences and potentially perpetuate bias. Thus, our approach to learning analytics is iterative and incremental and when possible, analyses are combined with qualitative data and the voices of those from whom the data are collected.
